Our Classes 4-11

Description:

It almost goes without saying that the study of history is important. Yet for the Orthodox Christian, history can often appear as an ideological minefield. Many textbooks on world history or Western civilization present Christianity as a force of oppression and treat the sacred history of the Old and New Testaments as myth rather than fact. In this class, students will begin their study of history from an Orthodox perspective, exploring how God’s work is revealed in sacred and world history. Orthodoxy will serve as the foundation for all of our studies, helping students develop both knowledge of key events and the ability to see history as meaningful and purposeful.

Description:

In this first stage of the progymnasmata, students will learn to paraphrase fables by retelling or writing them in their own words, following the principle that good writing is learned through imitation. They will identify key plot components in each story, including recognition, reversal, and suffering.

Throughout the course, students will practice variation by using different words and phrases with the same meaning, explore figures of description to make their writing vivid, and review essential grammar skills such as capitalization, punctuation, and parts of speech.
