Saints and Serpents: The Hobbit for Orthodox Christians
Description:
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, published in 1937, is one of the most beloved children’s books of all time, selling over a hundred million copies and putting its stamp on the artistic landscape of the 20th Century, inspiring visual art, music, and film. The book's unforgettable characters, vivid settings, exciting storyline, and important ideas make it a must-read. And of course we can't neglect to mention that it sets up the even more popular work, The Lord of the Rings!
What you may not know, though, is that with an Orthodox Christian lens, we can get much more out of the book! With me as your Gandalf, we'll not only joyfully explore the aforementioned story elements, but we'll bring out the Christian themes that make the story so much more meaningful and edifying.
This class will consist of ten videos, each 45-60 minutes long. There will be optional quizzes after each video, as well as an optional essay at the end of the course.
